Overall, the upper feels secure, with the lacing system comfortably taking up the slack as you dial in the fit. The ankle collar tapers away from the achilles to avoid irritation, although the stitching can still irritate your skin if you’re wearing ankle socks. Beneath the Vaporweave, a mesh inner sleeve connects to a bootie-like tongue that doesn’t bunch up. Its lack of stretchiness makes the fit more secure, too. Lakota GambillĪbove the tall midsole, you’ll find Vaporweave, a blend of thermoplastic polymers and nylon-it’s designed to avoid holding water (like Flyknit did). The Vaporweave material also breathes well without immediately absorbing rain and water. Our testers lauded the comfort from the bootie-like upper. There isn’t much arch support or any pronation-limiting measures, so the tall and narrow design might not be ideal for runners used to wider, more stable trainers. The forefoot is significantly wider than the heel heel-striking testers expressed concern over the unstable sensation from the narrow heel. Most of our testers said they used the shoe for long runs and speedwork alike, an indication of the shoe’s versatility. With about 1.5 inches of foam beneath your heel and an inch beneath your forefoot, the midsole feels substantial.
“The new midsole with the carbon plate made it feel like I was stepping on a mini trampoline with each step,” said one tester. RW Shoe Lab results showed significantly higher cushioning in the heel than the forefoot, as well as extreme stiffness from the carbon-filled sole. The React foam-carbon plate-React foam sandwich carries over from the previous two Zoom Flys, although the new shoe’s foam has been shaped to look like its Vaporfly Next% cousin. We measured the heel height of the women’s shoe at 34mm, making it among the tallest trainers around.
