

Climb over the stile’s steps and continue along the path and onto a farm track. Go through the gate and take the right hand path back towards Mam Tor.Īlong this part of the Mam Tor Walk, you will come to a small wooded section. There is a small signposted gate by the Trig Point pillar. The level plateau of Mam Tor also makes it popular with paragliders on a sunny day.Īfter taking in the view, continue the Mam Tor Circular Walk by following the flagstones north along the ridge and descend to Hollins Cross. On an especially clear day you might be able to see the high moors of the Kinder Plateau. See if you can spot any of the carved stones that illustrate the landmark's history and can help take your mind off the ascent!Ītop the windswept you will be rewarded with far reaching views of the Vale of Edale, Peveril Castle and the Hope Valley. Walk through the gate and veer left to the stone steps that lead to the summit of Mam Tor.

Climb a short series of steps through the woodland before following the track right to a small sign posted gate. There is a large public car park here (parking fees applicable).The Mam Tor Walking trail starts at the far end of the car park. The walk starts and ends at the Visitor Information Centre, which also has a café and shop. We recommend The Peak Hotel for a great range of pub food and drinks. Allow 3-4 hours to complete this walk at a moderate pace, allowing for rest stops to take in the views.Ĭastleton has a wide selection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. Be aware that the opening section through Cave Dale is quite rocky and follows the bed of a stream so is often wet underfoot, as is a short section on the way back down from Hollins Cross. For the most part it uses clearly-marked trails and hill paths, with some country lanes. From there it treks up on to Mam Tor and along the iconic Great Ridge, from where there are magnificent views of the Hope Valley and Edale Valley, before descending back into Castleton. On the way it climbs through the hidden gorge of Cave Dale, offering a wonderful perspective of Peveril Castle.
